BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

It’s the last Big Bang episode before Halloween arrives this year, so CBS is taking this time to present the show’s new holiday-themed episode – in which Wolowitz creates a stir by dressing up for Halloween. As Sheldon.

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

In 1977, Mel Brooks made this incisively intricate parody of Alfred Hitchcock films – and had both the confidence and the comedic genitals to screen it for Hitchcock himself, who not only approved, but afterward sent Brooks a very generous gift. For the rest of us, the film High Anxiety is gift enough, especially with on-screen antics not only by Brooks, but by Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Korman, and Brooks’ old Your Show of Show cohort, Howard Morris.

NBC, 8:30 p.m. ET

Once again, the premise, and playing field, of this clever sitcom has changed. First the quartet of central characters were in heaven, which turned out to be hell – which turned out to be a particular patch of hell designed by a demon to torture them. And that was only Season 1. In Season 2, the demon identified and sided with the four doomed souls, and conspired with his assistant to save them. But at this point in Season 3, those souls can’t be saved – but have decided to do good for others without any expectation or hope of reward. Which, in this very philosophical sitcom, may be the only path to true redemption.

Paramount, 10:00 p.m. ET

This is not a recommendation: After the Parkland school shooting, this series was shelved by Paramount. But now, somehow, it’s thought to be a better time to present this TV version of the cult film. The climactic tenth episode, with a school explosion, has been edited out, and reshaped into a gentler nine-episode Season 1, which rolls out this week on Paramount, starting with two episodes tonight. Considering that the show’s themes include social polarization, weapons and violence in the schools, suicide, and plots of murder, perhaps Heathers isn’t that well-timed for today, specifically, either.

Sundance, 12:00 a.m. ET

The original series Deutschland 83 was presented in 2015 on Sundance. Three years later, it’s Deutschland 86 – and it’s three years later in this show’s narrative, too. Maria Schrader and Jonas Nay star as Lenora and Martin Rauch, and Martin continues his activities as an undercover operative, working for one side of a divided Germany while spying for the other.

Great breakdown! Having well-written television like this makes evening downtime so much more engaging. When I'm taking a break between episodes or just relaxing after a long day of screen time, I usually unwind for a bit with a few casual rounds on [chicken road](https://chickenroad.gr.com/) before starting the next season. Really appreciate the thoughtful recommendations on this site!
