Last week, the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) couldn’t exit the TARDIS, because of a shift in space-time dimensional relative reality. (You had to be there.) Tonight, he can exit his time-and-spaceship – and when he does, he returns to a familiar place, Trafalgar Square in London. But it’s in a very unfamiliar condition. Here’s another gem of an SNL vintage rerun: Tom Hanks is the host of this show, guest hosting in 1990, just two years after making the shift from Bosom Buddies to movie star as the big-screen star of Big. The young kid showed such promise. Whatever happened to him?  The musical guest is Aerosmith – so watch this 1990 edited-down installment and realize that decades in Steven Tyler’s future is a gig as judge on American Idol.

Okay, this is ridiculous. I know I keep talking about how this show lands such good guests, and does such good things once it lands them. But check out tonight’s lineup: Not only Robert Duvall and Robert Downey, Jr., who are on a movie publicity tour, but Stephen Fry – and U2. David Bianculli has been a TV critic since 1975, including a 14-year stint at the New York Daily News, and sees no reason to stop now. Currently, he's TV critic for NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and is an occasional substitute host for that show. He's also an author and teaches TV and film history at New Jersey's Rowan University.
