BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Tonight is Ava Gardner night on TCM – and the evening begins with 1954’s The Barefoot Contessa, a movie which shows off her confident and alluring sex appeal. (Then again, which movie of hers doesn’t?)

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: True Blood fans have reason to be excited by this new NBC series – but only in theory. It’s based on a series of novels by Charlaine Harris, the author of the original True Blood stories, and it’s another small-town tale of a place where vampires, witches, shapeshifters and other supernatural creatures coexist, however uneasily. But HBO had series creator Alan Bell to make sense and sensuality of it all – and this NBC series is more like a vampire with baby teeth. It’s a series without, at first, any real bite or appeal. But in a very slow summer, it might be worth an initial visit, at least by the curious. For full reviews, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes and David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

Joe’s Violin, one of the offerings tonight on P.O.V., was an Oscar-nominated documentary short subject, and now makes its TV debut. Kahane Cooperman directs this unexpected story about a 91-year-old Holocaust survivor, a 12-year-old Bronx schoolgirl, and a prized possession. Check local listings.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE: Last week, HBO presented a four-part documentary profile of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine that told very interesting stories, but suffered a bit from a lack of objectivity. You could level the same criticism against this new documentary of Diana, Princess of Wales, and her relationship with sons Harry and William – but since it’s overseen by the princes themselves, on the 20th anniversary of their mother’s death, the value of it is in its perspective, not its journalistic objectivity. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

TBS, 10:30 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: This out-of-this-world comedy – well, technically, an aliens-infiltrating-this-world comedy – begins its second season tonight. The truth is out there, and the extraterrestrials are down here. So now what?
