BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

MOVIE PREMIERE: This Netflix movie, one of the new programming avenues with which it’s experimenting, streams beginning today, starring Paul Rudd as a man who takes a six-week course and sets out to become an at-home caregiver. His first potential patient is a young invalid with muscular dystrophy, played by Craig Roberts, whose initial entrance, a few minutes into this gentle comedy-drama by Rob Burnett, ought to persuade you to stick around and settle in. Burnett, former executive producer of Late Show with David Letterman, is trying something new here, at least for him: a character study that turns into a buddy-comedy road trip, but with more complications and angst than most. Co-stars include Selena Gomez, Jennifer Ehle and Bobby Cannavale.

BBC World News, 10:30 a.m. ET

There are many days when I slide over to watch BBC World News, now available several times a day on the BBC World News America channel (search for it). But today, starting at 10:30 a.m. ET, everyone should watch, because British coverage of its own stunning Brexit decision – with voters in England voting to leave the European Union – is going to be something to watch. And already, it’s being called by some British pundits as a sign that the same global discontent will sweep Donald Trump into the White House.

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

More wonderful Billy Wilder-directed movies are shown today on TCM, starting at 8 p.m. ET with 1958’s Witness for the Prosecution, a delightful mystery movie starring Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton. Also tonight, don’t miss 1959’s Some Like It Hot (10:15 p.m. ET) and 1960’s The Apartment (2:45 a.m. ET), both starring Jack Lemmon. That’s three classics in three years, an amazing stretch.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

With the House of Representatives sit-in, the U.S. Supreme Court 4-4 “non-decision” blocking some of President Obama’s immigration reform executive orders, and England’s astounding vote to remove itself from the European Union, this is one hell of a news week. And Maher’s guests this week include Paul Begala, Michael Steele, and The Nightly Show host Larry Wilmore.
