These last weeks of David Letterman’s shows – and yes, we’re down to that, because the final
Late Show with David Letterman is now less than a month away – are increasingly rewarding to watch, with guests saying their proper farewells, after which baseball-card-style graphics display a photo of that guest’s first TV appearance with Dave. Vintage clips, especially of classic field pieces with Letterman and his crew out on the streets, also are doled out almost nightly – and the guests coming by are top-notch. Tonight, for example, it’s Jerry Seinfeld. And expect some very casual and natural conversation. One of the most recent episodes of
Jerry Seinfeld’s brilliant web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee has Seinfeld borrowing one of David Letterman’s cars – a Volvo family car supercharged by Paul Newman as a joke – and driving him for coffee. It’s the best interview with David Letterman, receiving rather than asking questions, I’ve ever seen.
