SERIES PREMIERE: This new Netflix series is an odd curiosity – or a curious oddity – that you may consider worth a look. Imagine the Mad Max post-apocalyptic universe, and the deadly tribal fiefdoms of The Warriors, transplanted to a group of futuristic high school cliques. The bomb has dropped, all adults are dead or zombie-ish, and the teens left behind are fighting for supremacy, Lord of the Flies style. How did all this come about? The hero, a former slacker named Josh, admits to ignorance, due to the chief malady of young people his age: “I wasn’t paying attention.” That made me laugh – and stick around to see a bit more. Matthew Broderick is a surprising co-star here… and, after a few episodes, gets his own showcase installment. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.
Epix, 8:00 p.m. ET
On a slow night, curl up with a classic character comedy-drama that defined a generation. Lawrence Kasdan wrote and directed this 1983 movie, which examined Baby Boomers reuniting while reflecting on their own relationships, directions, and personal meanings. And my, what a cast: Glenn Close, Kevin Kline, William Hurt, Jeff Goldblum, all young and dynamic and somewhat adrift. Oh, and the music. Watch for the actors. Listen for the music.
NBC, 9:30 p.m. ET
Last week, it was revealed that Janet (D’Arcy Carden) wasn’t the team’s familiar, friendly Janet, but a “bad Janet” impersonating her in order to sew discord. Tonight, there’s a rescue mission, to find and return the good Janet to the Good Place – or whatever place they’re in right now.
CBS, 10:00 p.m. ET
Trick or treat? Tonight’s episode is titled “October 31,” but arrives one week before Halloween – and involves a possession and a potential exorcism, with spooky terrors behind closed doors. Based on this series so far, I’d say… Treat!
