BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

Game 1 of the San Francisco Giants vs. Kansas City Royals World Series made it look like this year’s Fall Classic might be a blowout, with the Giants dominating like – well, like Giants. But Game 2, two-thirds of the way through a much more competitive contest, saw the Royals explode with a scoring jag that evened the series, and set the stage for tonight’s Game 3. Tonight the scene shifts to San Francisco, where Kansas City will have to play by the Giants’ rules.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

It’s interesting, if not exactly ironic, that Tony Bennett is appearing directly opposite Game 3 of the World Series tonight. It means that the singer whose most famous hit is “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” will be singing his heart out while the Giants play in San Francisco. But he’s singing, this time, with Lady Gaga, in a performance recorded at Lincoln Center in July. This is no quickly improvised jazz vocal set: The sets and lighting are by the amazing Robert Wilson (Philip Glass’ Einstein on the Beach), and the songs are pulled from the great American songbook. Check local listings.

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: This is a warning, not a recommendation. The high entertainment values of Fox’s Gotham and the CW’s The Flash might lead you to conclude that any new comic-book series this fall is a good bet. Not true – as Constantine will prove to you if you tune in. For a full review, see Ed Bark’s Uncle Barky’s Bytes.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

Bill Maher doesn’t need any help generating quotes that turn out to be incendiary and, on social media, long-lasting. But tonight, his roster includes two guests who are specialists of the form: Mary Matalin and Cornel West.

HBO, 11:00 p.m. ET

This is the second song in this inventive series, in which the Foo Fighters visit a different city for inspiration, interviewing people about the local music scene and history, and emerging with a song. This week it’s the Beltway, and the new song is called “The Feast and the Famine.”
