BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Netflix has an easy-to-watch, ready-to-binge new series in GLOW, which premieres today with all 10 half-hour episodes of its comedy-drama available for viewing. It’s a fictional comedy based on a real TV show: a late-Eighties syndicated women’s wrestling show called Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, or G.L.O.W. In this salute to that early testament to TV tackiness, Alison Brie – from both Mad Men and Community, stars as an unsuccessful actress named Ruth, who attends an audition for a proposed new show about women wrestlers – and, improbably, finds her calling, as well as a gaggle of similarly struggling but ultimately endearing misfits. Betty Gilpin from Masters of Sex co-stars as a former soap actress contemplating a small-screen return, and Marc Maron made me laugh out loud repeatedly as the burned-out B-list director charged with helping the auditioning women find their wrestling moves and their in-the-ring characters. He gets to deliver, with roaringly dry understatement, what to me is the year’s funniest line of TV dialogue to date, while riffing play-by-play on an early tag-team match: “Not looking good,” he says, “for the white supremacists.” For my review on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, visit the Fresh Air website. And for full reviews on TVWW, see Ed Bark’s Uncle Barky’s Bytes and David Hinckley’s All Along the Watchtower.

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE: GLOW isn’t the only Netflix program premiering today that has a connection to wrestling. Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press, directed by Brian Knappenberger, focuses on the case of Bollea v. Gawker, in which former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan sued the gossip website Gawker for posting a sex video of him. The lawsuit was financed by Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel, who used his money and muscle to not only pursue the case, but to financial bankrupt Gawker in the process. The rest of Nobody Speaks asks if wealthy people using their influence and resources to shut down media voices of which they disapprove is a good thing. The question should be rhetorical – but in this day and age, it’s not. And Gawker, and what it strove to share with the public, was hardly the New York Times and the Pentagon Papers. But here we are…

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

MOVIE PREMIERE: This new Netflix movie stars Bella Thorne (pictured) as Holly, an attractive young women who has a one-night stand with a handsome guy – then obsessively decides he should be hers and hers alone. It’s basically a high-school version of Fatal Attraction – but without the boiled bunny.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

It’s Bread Week on The Great British Baking Show, which means that fortunes, and contestants, will rise and fall right alongside their creations. I don’t knead to come up with a bread pun when writing about this particular episode – but I feel, under the circumstances, it’s the yeast I can do. Check local listings.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

This week, Bill Maher and his guests get to discuss both the content of the Senate’s health care bill and the tweet in which President Trump revealed the “truth” about those purported tape recordings of James Comey. In terms of TV comedy, those topics are like swinging for the fences in a game of tee-ball. Should be easy… and fun.

Speaking of finding reliable information, I've been doing some research lately on platforms that are actually straightforward about their terms. It's amazing how much difference it makes when everything is clearly displayed upfront, especially with minimums and processing times. I came across https://thor-fortunes.org/ while comparing options, and the way they lay out their cashier details in EUR makes it easy to understand exactly what to expect before committing.
