BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

TCM, 4:00 p.m. ET

Still a brilliant, vibrant movie, this 1964 Richard Lester films captures the Beatles in all their early glory – literally. Scenes in which scores of extras, specifically young girls, go gaga over the Fab Four transform, once the Beatles are inserted into the frame, from scripted depictions of Beatlemania to the real thing. John, Paul, George, Ringo – they all have great screen presence, and know their way around punch lines and how to deliver dialogue. (George Harrison, when asked by an inquisitive reporter “What would you call this haircut?,”  responds, “Arthur.”) Oh, and the music, and the proto music videos? Astoundingly fresh then. Deliriously fresh now.

Showtime, 8:00 p.m. ET

I wonder sometimes, what this political documentary series would do during a slow news week. I’ve come to suspect, though, that such an animal, in fewer than 100 days, has become all but extinct.

Smithsonian, 8:00 p.m. ET

This is one of many specials keyed to the 25th anniversary of the Los Angeles demonstrations of protest – or, as this documentary’s title calls them, Riots. For an overview of the specials, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

MINISERIES FINALE: The first season of Feud, telling the story of Joan Crawford and Bette Davis during and after the filming of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, concludes tonight. It’s the last we’ll see of Jessica Lange as Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Davis, because next season will present a new story, and a new Feud. But boy, these two have been great – and so has Alfred Molina, by the way, as director Robert Aldrich.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: For Season 4 of this series, the startup known as Pied Piper has become a victim of its own success – and the individual team members who created the company have to decide whether to stay on, sell out, or both.

HBO, 10:32 p.m. ET

Talk about hubris: In tonight’s episode, Selina visits the dedication for the opening of the library honoring President Hughes.

HBO, 11:02 p.m. ET

I said this last week, and I’ll say it again: Good luck summarizing this week, John Oliver. And he did a great job last week, by the way, explaining in detail the upcoming election in France, and its importance. So expect, tonight, he’ll do that again, only in retrospect.
