BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: What I said yesterday on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross in my fall TV preview there still holds: “This week, if you see only one new TV series – and, to be honest, that’s about all you should see – make it The Muppets.” Even Pepe the Shrimp made me laugh, and the fact that Kermit’s new brown-haired receptionist girlfriend bears a resemblance not only to Miss Piggy, but to Jenna Fischer’s Pam from NBC’s The Office, is the sort of satirical subtext that makes me 100 percent sold on this new Muppets incarnation. For a full review, see Ed Bark’s Uncle Barky’s Bytes, my own Fresh Air fall TV report, or our collective TVWW 2015 Fall TV previews.

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Emma Roberts, who’s stood out in the most recent American Horror Story reboot, stars in this new series, also from Ryan Murphy. It’s also envisioned as an anthology series, reimagining itself after each season, which in this case is planned at 13 episodes. It’s set at a college sorority, where a bloody and long-buried tragedy from 20 years before returns to haunt Roberts’ Chanel Oberlin and the rest of her snooty sorority sisters, as well as the geeky new pledges forced upon the sorority by the no-nonsense university dean of students. She’s played by Jamie Lee Curtis, who steals this show almost effortlessly from Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin, Ariana Grande and others. But the tone of Scream Queens is too arch, too mean, and, like the recent CBS series Stalker and Fox’s own The Following, too in love with its own depiction and glorification of violence. As a curiosity, sample it once, if you like – but I don’t think you’ll like.  For a full review, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes.

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

When this series premiered last week, we didn’t know what to expect. Now we do, sort of --  and one thing I expect is to have a little more variety, and comedy, and be a little less frantic. This week’s guest announcer: Alec Baldwin. And if Harris doesn’t take advantage of Baldwin’s ease with live TV from all those guest spots on Saturday Night Live, this show will be making a big mistake.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

This second episode makes it official: Although the men carry most of the swords in this new series about 14th-century Welsh uprisings, the women are by far the most interesting characters. For starters, there’s Katey Sagal as the witchlike healer and seer known as Annora – and then there’s the woman who pretends to be the wife of the executioner, for reasons that are either compassionate or crazy. Too early to tell, but it’s fun to watch.

CBS, 11:35 p.m. ET

When Stephen Colbert appeared in front of TV critics at summer’s Television Critics Association press tour, he regretted that he was off the air until September, while Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump was making headlines. Colbert wasted no time in poking fun at Trump on the opening night of Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and hasn’t really let up since. But tonight, his special guest is Donald Trump himself. And remember: Colbert will be talking to, and interviewing, Trump not in the former “Stephen Colbert” conservative pundit persona, but as Stephen Colbert. Must-See TV, no question.
