BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

ABC, 9:00 p.m. ET

DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE: Part 1 of 2. This four-hour documentary, concluding tomorrow night on ABC, comes not from the network’s news division, but as a co-production by People magazine and Four M Studios (the recently rebranded TV production arm of Time Inc.). So, essentially, it’s People, so expect that level of depth, which isn’t much. But ABC might as well devote four hours of valuable prime-time real estate to a look at Britain’s Royal Family – because really, this week, what else of interest and importance could ABC find to fill its time? Sigh.

Encore, 9:00 p.m. ET

Cameron Crowe’s 2000 semi-autobiographical movie, about his early days as an underage rock journalist for Rolling Stone, is a well-crafted, completely delightful movie, with set-piece scenes that include proof of the infectious joy of rock ’n’ roll, set on a tour bus to an impromptu singalong to Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer.” There are plenty of great performances leavened into this mix that worth savoring again and again, including Philip Seymour Hoffman’s prickly turn as rock critic Lester Bangs; Billy Crudup and Jason Lee as members of a feuding rock band; Anna Paquin, Fairuza Balk and especially Kate Hudson as groupies; Patrick Fugit as Crowe’s alter ego, William Miller; and Zooey Deschanel as William’s free-spirit older sister. But my oh my, watch what Frances McDormand does as William’s protective mother. Four years after starring in the movie Fargo, she takes a small supporting role and gives Almost Famous its crucial, central heart.

AT&T Audience Network, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Last year’s first season of Mr. Mercedes would seem to have completed the story it set out to tell. Based on the Stephen King novel, it was a very gripping miniseries about a retired detective named Bill Hodges, played by Brendan Gleeson, haunted by a crime he had been unable to solve – the case of a deranged man who used a stolen Mercedes to plow into a crowd of people lined up to apply at a job recruitment fair. That man, Brady Hartsfield, played by Harry Treadaway, resurfaced to taunt Hodges, and the two played an escalating, dangerous game – which ended, at the conclusion of Season 1, with Hodges surviving a heart attack he suffered while helping to thwart Brady’s latest mass murder scheme, and Brady beaten senselessly into a long-term coma. So where in the world can Mr. Mercedes go from here? With David E. Kelley writing some of the scripts, delving deeply into King’s world, to some amazing, truly spooky places. Let’s just say that Brady, while in his most immobile state, nonetheless makes for the most threatening and frightening coma victim since Leo Johnson in the original Twin Peaks – and what happens by the end of the second episode of this new season of Mr. Mercedes turns this series into an entirely new level, and category, of drama. In a word: Wow. For a full review, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes.

TBS, 10:30 p.m. ET

There are certain weeks where comedy recaps of real-life news can seem almost therapeutic. This is one of them, and of the weekly shows doing such duty – by Bill Maher, John Oliver and Samantha Bee – Bee gets to approach the plate and swing first.
