BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

NBC, 7:00 a.m. ET

For the weekend, starting with today’s Day 3 of course play, NBC takes over from the Golf Channel. Jordan Spieth is atop the board at 6 under par as the day begins, with Matt Kuchar two strokes behind. Broadcast live from the Royal Birkdale Golf Course in Southport, England.

AXS TV, 7:00 p.m. ET

Musically, if you know Who – and you like the Who – AXS has a great lineup for you tonight. In addition to programs profiling and interviewing members of the seminal rock band, tonight’s AXS lineup presents two equally seminal Who movies. One, at 7 p.m. ET, is this fast-paced, music-filled documentary about the group, which includes its infamous American TV debut on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1967, when Keith Moon super-sized the explosive charges in his drum kit and damn near blew up the band at the climax of “My Generation” (pictured). Then, at 9 p.m. ET, AXS follows that with 1975’s Tommy, the film version of the Who’s magnum opus rock opera, as directed by the bizarre Ken Russell, and featuring not only the members of the Who, but Jack Nicholson, Ann-Margret, and Elton John.

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

Mel Gibson got some of his Hollywood respect back by directing this 2016 WWII drama, in which Andrew Garfield stars as Army medic Desmond T. Doss, who received the Medal of Honor without ever firing a weapon.

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

MOVIE PREMIERE: Last year, director Laura Poitras, the filmmaker behind the fascinating Citizenfour, premiered her documentary film on WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at the Cannes Film Festival. This is its TV debut – and for the occasion, Poitras has updated Risk by adding new footage tied to the 2016 presidential campaign – during which WikiLeaks dumped thousands of hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee, an action which continues to generate headlines top this day.

BBC America, 10:00 p.m. ET

Last week, Cosima stole a boat and attempted an escape – but this week, the schemers running the evil clone-making corporation, including Rachel (who herself is a clone), have more moves to make. And so do the clones themselves, who are banding together even more aggressively to rescue, save, and fight for one another.
