BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

TCM is showing an evening of cult movies tonight, and most of them are films I watched in theaters the first time around – often at midnight showings. First up: 1971’s Harold & Maude, the Hal Ashby comedy starring Bud Cort as a seemingly suicidal teenager whose outlook on life is improved after he meets, and falls in love with, an 80-year-old free spirit played by Ruth Gordon. The musical soundtrack, by Cat Stevens, was an unexpected addition to the film, a temp-track guide that became permanent – but it’s invaluable.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

The title of this documentary pretty much says it all – but doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch it, and take heed. I thought I thaw a documentary on Yellowstone and climate change. I did, I did thaw a documentary… Check local listings.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: Last Sunday, Carrie Coon, as Nora Durst on The Leftovers, was dead center at the final episode of that mercurial, unpredictable drama series. Tonight, as former police chief Gloria Burgle, she’s at dead center of another one. Can’t wait. And I’m worried about her, about Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Nikki Swango. I’m rooting for them both to survive this final episode of Season 3 of Fargo – but I’m afraid, on this bleak and boldly surprising series, that may be too much to ask.

TCM, 10:00 p.m. ET

Rob Reiner directed this howlingly funny 1984 mockumentary, a parody of music documentaries about a wildly self-obsessed heavy-metal band. Band members, the central ones, are played by Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest, and Michael McKean. McKean, like Carrie Coon on tonight’s Fargo, just figured prominently in a memorable season finale – in his case, as Jimmy McGill’s brother Chuck on AMC’s Better Call Saul, whose final appearance of the season was positively incendiary. Here, he’s much more laid-back, and almost recognizable, as Spinal Tap musician David St. Hubbins.

TCM, 1:00 a.m. ET

Paul Bartel both directed and co-stars, with Mary Woronov, in this 1982 black comedy – pre-Internet – about a couple that uses alternative-newspaper personal ads as a way to lure potential victims. Stefon from Saturday Night Live should review this movie, because it’s got everything: comedy, corpses, cannibalism, even some kinky sex.
