BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Hulu, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: The first three episodes of Season 1 are available to stream today on Hulu, as the service adds to the constellation of TV dramas from the Marvel Universe. Like several others, most specifically Fox’s The Gifted, this new series is, in part, about young teens just discovering and coming to terms with their paranormal powers. But where, in The Gifted, as the parents learn of their children’s abilities, they band together as a family, Runaways pits one generation against the other. The parents, it turns out, are members of a secret organization with seemingly nefarious goals – and it’s up to the kids to rebel against them, in more ways than one. The first three episodes do little more than lay out the conflicts and characters, but even with a slow rollout, Marvel’s Runaways is a galactic leap forward from, say, ABC’s Marvel’s The Inhumans. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

MGM HD, 7:50 p.m. ET

After the success of the original Westworld movie, which also inspired the current HBO reimagining, the AIP studio followed up with a 1976 sequel. The connecting link was Yul Brynner, reprising his role as the robot gunslinger – but this time, his adversaries were new park visitors played by Peter Fonda and Blythe Danner. Most memorable were the dream sequences, in which Danner’s character fantasized about the gunslinger – as Fonda’s character watched on a computerized “dream monitor.” Still waiting for that app…

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

This is night two of the live shows – and tonight is elimination night, when votes from the public determine which of the Top 10 move on to the next shows… and which do not.

NBC, 9:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s episode is called “Number Two,” and is devoted to another of the three siblings…. And, as was mentioned in the promos, a medical mishap. After tonight, it’ll be two down, one to go, in this interconnected ratings sweeps month story line.

USA, 10:00 p.m. ET

The two episodes of Damnation thus far have been strong on establishing characters and their very intense conflicts. So far, it’s been interesting enough to stay with – but this is the point where it either gets more involving or less believable.
