Today at 3 p.m. ET, the U.S. women’s team faces Sweden, the other team atop Group F – though the US. squad has a huge lead in goals scored so far this tournament. Both teams are 2-0 in this opening group stage, but Sweden has scored seven goals in its two games to date. The U.S. team has scored 16.

SERIES PREMIERE: ABC has no end of stupid summer competition series: game shows, reality shows, and the occasional test-of-skill show. Holey Moley, a sort of crazily over-inflated idea of a miniature golf competition, premieres tonight. And while it hardly qualifies under the TV Worth Watching rubric, I’m a sucker for miniature golf, so I thought I’d at least mention it, in case any of you otherwise discerning readers are similar softies.

Tonight’s episode is called “Death of a Car Salesman,” and you can guess what sort of brain, and personality, Liv is absorbing tonight…a real hard-sell type.

THE GREAT ESCAPE

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Based on a true story of Allied soldiers planning a mass escape from a Nazi prisoner of war camp, this 1963 movie is a fabulous group character study, populated by some powerfully charismatic actors: Steve McQueen, James Garner, James Corburn, David MCallum and others.

THE AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD TO DENZEL WASHINGTON

TNT, 10:00 p.m. ET

Taped on June 6, this salute to Denzel Washington kicks off with Julia Roberts, who co-starred with the actor in The Pelican Brief more than 25 years ago. There are plenty of other celebrities gathered here to honor the former St. Elsewhere co-star – but the most touching tributes in this program may be the ones to Washington’s first acting teacher, and to Washington’s mother.
