BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Smithsonian, 8:00 p.m. ET

CONCLUSION: This is Part 3 of 3 of British naturalist David Attenborough’s latest nature documentary series, a study of flying creatures that covers everything from pterodactyls to dragonflies. Tonight’s final episode is called “Triumph of the Skies,” and is about the most dominant creatures occupying the air. Spoiler Alert: Expect some good footage, and insight, on eagles.

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

German cinema continues to be saluted Wednesdays on TCM this month, and tonight the lineup begins with a rare, long German film I don’t think has ever being televised in the U.S. prior to tonight: 1922’s Dr. Mabuse (pictured), director Fritz Lang’s mammoth movie divided into two 2.5-hour chunks, The Gambler and Inferno. Rudolf Klein-Rogge stars in the title role. And after the two 1922 films comes a sequel (at 12:45 a.m. ET), filmed 11 years later, with the same director, star and subject: 1933’s The Testament of Dr. Mabuse. Also shown tonight are two more frequently televised German classics, also directed by Fritz Lang: 1926’s Metropolis (at 3 a.m. ET), a silent sci-fi classic, and (at 5:45 a.m. ET) 1931’s M, the creepy child-murderer character study that made a star of Peter Lorre.

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

The son also falls: Tonight on Empire, it’s father vs. son for control of the music company, as Lucious makes his play to regain power in front of a lot of influential witnesses – which is the whole point.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

This new Nova examines an interesting subject, which I first encountered about 15 years ago when visiting Banff, Canada for a TV festival. Above the highways of that rugged northern landscape, every so often, were overpasses leading not to other highways, but allowing migrating and grazing animals to cross safely without being hit by moving vehicles. Who came up with ideas like this, and how are they implemented successfully? Welcome to another informative Nova. Check local listings.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

The dangers of spying, and lying, get even more evident tonight, as Martha learns enough of the truth to be dangerously unpredictable.
