BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

This week on The Voice, we’re finally down to the live shows, which puts a different type of pressure on two groups. It puts it on the remaining 12 contestants, whose fate now shifts largely from the judges to the viewers, whose vote now determines whether they will advance. And there’s a different kind of pressure on the judges, too, because now, in these live shows, their often rambling comments about the contestants, and jibes to one another, cannot be edited. Talking to time is a very different type of TV skill, and not every judge displays it.

PBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

SPECIAL PREMIERE: On Oct. 22, David Letterman went to Washington, D.C. as recipient of the 20th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. (To which I say: After 20 years, to not make room for the Smothers Brothers is just shy of criminal.) But in the past few days, a change was made to the program produced for PBS to honor and preserve that occasion. Sen. Al Franken participated in the event, but according to PBS, has been edited out of the broadcast after being accused of sexual harassment by a fellow USO tour member a decade ago. “Every year,” PBS said in a carefully worded statement, “this program is edited for both length and content to keep it focused on its intended purpose as a celebration of American humor.” Okay – but another question worth asking is, “What would Mark Twain want?” Check local listings.

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE: Sonja Sohn, who played Detective Kima in HBO’s The Wire, is behind this other timely, issue-focused TV program from and about Baltimore, MD. But this one is nonfiction, and looks at activists, police officers, civic leaders, gang members and everyday citizens as they react, immediately and in the 18 months afterwards, to the 2016 death of Freddie Gray while in police custody. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

In tonight’s episode, Reed’s kids, who have only recently revealed and explored their own latent mutant powers, wield them in self-defense – and with the Mutant Underground being attacked from both without and within, all of a sudden there’s a lot to defend.

AMC, 10:00 p.m. ET

Robert Kirkman has presented two episodes of his documentary series on comics so far, and been very democratic in his focus: the premiere episode was on the origin and development of Marvel Comics, and the second gave the same treatment to Wonder Woman from the rival DC Comics universe. Tonight’s third episode is devoted to another DC costumed superhero, the iconic Superman – who first appeared, on the cover of Action Comics #1, 80 years ago. Eighty. How old do you feel now? Personally, I feel... Super old.

Checking out classic television recommendations and archival TV reviews is always a great way to discover hidden gems and nostalgic shows to watch. Having dedicated guides makes finding quality entertainment so much easier. While discussing classic media and online entertainment options with friends recently, someone also recommended checking out platforms like [thorfortune](https://thorfortunes.it/) for a smooth and engaging user experience. Great breakdown! Having well-written television like this makes evening downtime so much more engaging. When I'm taking a break between episodes or just relaxing after a long day of screen time, I usually unwind for a bit with a few casual rounds on [chicken road](https://chickenroad.gr.com/) before starting the next season. Really appreciate the thoughtful recommendations on this site!
