MINISERIES PREMIERE: This three-part miniseries, with Ridley Scott as one of its executive producers, takes place in 1897, following the fervent fever generated by the hope of instant riches in the turn-of-the-century gold rush days. It’s set in Dawson City, though most of the good-looking characters look like residents of Dawson’s Creek. This is Discovery’s first scripted drama, though, so it’s going for sizzle as well as scale, and hoping to succeed with a story that will appeal to a wide audience. Tim Roth and Sam Shepard star, but there are lots of lesser-known, younger names and faces to propel the story along. Like Abbie Cornish, for example.
