BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

This long-dormant sequel to the classic, influential 1982 Ridley Scott movie continues the story of Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard, but only obliquely. This time, Deckard is the hunted, not the hunter – and this time, the man hunting the “blade runners,” in this continuation directed by Denis Villeneuve, is played by Ryan Gosling. Ana de Armas co-stars as his omnipresent virtual-reality companion, aptly named Joi. As the movie’s title states, this sequel takes place in 2049. Remember when the original bleak future of the first film was set? Get ready for this one: The first Blade Runner, taking place in a rainy, built-up, run-down Los Angeles full of low-lives and replicants, took place in the year… 2019.

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

This is Episode 4 of this intense, searingly acted semi-autobiographical story by Edward St. Aubyn, who used his Patrick Melrose novels and alter ego to exorcise some very traumatic childhood memories and demons. Benedict Cumberbatch stars in the title role – and tonight, memories of his past, and especially of his parents (played by Hugo Weaving and Jennifer Jason Leigh), don’t get any lighter.

Showtime, 10:00 p.m. ET

Remember AnnaLynne McCord, the young actress who ripped her way through several seasons of Nip/Tuck, then clocked time in such less impressive efforts as TV remakes of Dallas and 90210? Well, she bounces back in this 2017 movie, all grown up, playing a temptress for whom robbery comes easy – and murder even easier. Matthew Gray Gubler plays the guy who, like a modern-day film noir patsy, gets caught in her seductive and deadly web.
