BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

The Knockout Rounds are here – and this year The Voice has added a new wrinkle, an instant pardon, where judges can rescue, and give a reprieve to, the losing contestant. Not sure how it works, exactly, but since most of the other additions and alterations to this series have been good ones, I’m willing to play along. And first-time judge Kelly Clarkson is learning all these rules very, very quickly…

TBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

In Saturday’s Final Four games, Michigan handled Loyola with increased confidence down the stretch, with its star forward, Moritz Wagner from Germany, setting the pace with his size, accuracy, and full-court energy and enthusiasm. Normally, he and his team would be tough to bet against, given the way they’ve played in this postseason. But Villanova has played even better, and on Saturday crushed another top-seeded team, Kansas, with an almost supernatural torrent of three-point shots from almost every player wearing a Wildcats uniform. Villanova’s offense, especially from the perimeter, can’t be expected to replicate that performance tonight against Michigan – but Villanova, the most prolific three-point shooting team in NCAA history, is even prouder of its defense. Which, I expect, will win tonight’s championship game, which I can’t wait to watch.

AMC, 9:00 p.m. ET

This new AMC series, which began last week with a two-hour premiere, is interesting because its setting and mood are equally chilly and foreboding. It tells of two 19th-century British ships trying to find a sailable path through the frozen Arctic – and having an increasingly tough time of it. The sounds, at times, are quite spooky – and so is the sight of red on white, as blood stains ice.

ABC, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This is not a recommendation. This new series starts with a visual stunner: bodies, many dozens of them, found floating by the seashore – some dead, but others alive. And as the mysterious premise of this show quickly reveals, the waterborne refugees actually are from the distant future, emerging from the sea to escape some sort of genocide yet to come. Viewers have to buy into the idea instantly, then stick around for the long run – but after seeing the pilot, starring Steve Zahn as a small-town sheriff investigating the visitors and their origins, I’d lost interest. ABC’s promo department, by contrast, is trying to sell The Crossing as a new, complex, time-warping mystery series “from the network that brought you Lost.” That’s a shameful bit of salesmanship, to push a link via the network rather than a writer or producer. ABC, remember, is also the network that brought us Mr. T and Tina. For full reviews, see David Hinckley’s All Along the Watchtower and Ed Bark’s Uncle Barky’s Bytes
