BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

In last week’s Season 11 premiere, Sheldon went through with his proposal to Amy, and the episode contained other sea-change surprises as well – namely, that Bernadette was pregnant again. And this week, some of the attention shifts to Leonard, after a media interview in which some of his remarks turn out to embarrass his physics department.

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Last week’s blind auditions were, as always, impressive, entertaining, and sometimes emotional. Jennifer Hudson has made her mark already as a new judge, and revealed both her competitiveness and her attitude. But as fellow judge Blake Shelton has pointed out several times already, the fact that she won The Voice U.K. doesn’t mean that similar success will follow stateside. It’ll be fun to watch, though. As will the blind auditions, which continue this week as the four judges (including Adam Levine and Miley Cyrus) build their respective teams.

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Last week, ABC unveiled Marvel’s Inhumans, the latest entry in the Marvel universe of TV series – latest, that is, until tonight, when Fox presents The Gifted. The differences between the two are immediate and obvious: Inhumans is a flop and a waste, while The Gifted may turn out to be the best Marvel TV series since Netflix’s Jessica Jones. Trace it, in part, to the people in front of the camera: Inhumans features no one of note, while The Gifted starts with Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker – long-time genre favorites thanks to their strong work in, respectively, True Blood and Angel. They play parents who discover, suddenly and quite unexpectedly, that their two teen children are mutants with special powers, and the kind of mutants the father used to track down as part of his top-secret government job. Until now, when he takes the family on the run and connects with a group of super-powered mutants hiding underground. In this series, the action and special effects are good, but the characterizations and relationships are even better. But give credit, and blame, behind the scenes as well. The Gifted is created for TV by Matt Nix and its pilot diected by Bryan Singer, two very talented TV folks -- while Inhumans is created by Scott Buck, whose previous Marvel series was the super-poorly received Iron Fist. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

MGM HD, 10:00 p.m. ET

This 1979 Woody Allen movie may be most remembered, and perhaps uncomfortably, as a love letter to May-December romances, with Allen portraying a New Yorker pursuing a high-school girl played by Mariel Hemingway.  But it’s really a love letter to Manhattan itself, with photography, scenery, and music by George Gershwin, all combined to paint a black-and-white portrait of the city that couldn’t be more evocative. Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep co-star.
