BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

getTV, 12:00 p.m. ET

Here’s another never-repeated rare Western TV series unearthed by getTV, which you can find by visiting the getTV website. Beginning today with a multi-episode mini-marathon, getTV is adding to its schedule Hondo, a 1967 Western TV series based on the 1953 movie. John Wayne starred in the big-screen version, and his production company produced this small-screen spinoff. Ralph Taeger plays the title character, a former Rebel officer and widower of an Indian wife, who resides in the post-Civil War West with a dog, a lot of bitterness, and little else – at least at first. Quickly, he’s positioned between the Native Americans and the cavalry, trying to make, and broker, peace, for himself and those around him. Noah Beery Jr., who later played James Garner’s dad in The Rockford Files, co-stars, and guest stars include Annette Funicello and Rick Nelson.

El Rey, 12:00 p.m. ET

This 1993 Stephen King miniseries, presented today in its entirety on El Rey, has an awful lot in common with the most recent, just-concluded King TV series, Under the Dome. Weirdly glowing objects from outer space cause humans to behave strangely, taking them over and even making them turn on one another. In Tommyknockers, it boosts their intelligence, and sometimes their sex drive, all for some eventually revealed nefarious purpose. As with most King miniseries and series, Tommyknockers starts intriguingly, starts sagging around the middle, and ends closer to preposterously. But check out the stars here: Jimmy Smits, Marg Helgenberger, Joanna Cassidy, E.G. Marshall and Traci Lords. If that doesn’t help you the next time you play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, you’re not playing correctly.

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Moira Shearer stars in Michael Powell’s sumptuously filmed 1948 movie about a monomaniacal ballet director, his muse, and her lover. It’s duly credited as one of the most evocatively beautiful movies ever filmed – and any look, new or old, at this adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen fable will bear that out. Especially on TCM, which presents the movie in its proper screen ratio.

Univision, 8:00 p.m. ET

SERIES FINALE: Sabado Gigante, the longest-running variety series in TV history, calls it quits tonight after 53 years on the air, with a live episode simulcast in the U.S., Chile and Mexico. Mario Luis Kreutzenberger Blumenfeld, the Chilean host known as Don Francisco, presides over the three-hour extravaganza one last time, making room not only for the standard supporting characters and models, but also for such grateful guest stars as Shakira, Marc Anthony, Gloria Estefan, and Enrique Iglesias. For an appreciation, see Linda Donovan's Dateline Donovan.

BBC America, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: This is the opening episode of Season 9 in this show’s modern era – but Doctor Who really was launched in England in 1963, only a year after the launch of Sabado Gigante. The current Doctor continues to be played by Peter Capaldi, and his companion, at least for now, by the wonderful Jenna Coleman. The new season begins with a two-parter, so be patient, Or just time-travel and watch next week’s episode now…
