BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Various Networks, 12:00 p.m. ET

There were plenty more upsets in yesterday’s round of 16 games, but the astounding finish to the late game between No. 6 seed Texas and No. 11 seed Northern Iowa beat anything else this year – and maybe any other. Texas ties the game with a layup with less than three seconds left, and Northern Iowa, after a quick in-bounds pass to UNI’s Paul Jesperson, watched time run out, and the buzzer sound, just after Jesperson launched a Hail Mary shot from beyond half court. It floated forever on a rainbow arc, smacked into the backboard and went in – giving Northern Iowa the upset victory, rather than a period of overtime. Unbelievable. Unforgettable. And exactly why these games are so much fun to watch. The action continues today at noon ET on CBS, with TNT joining the coverage at 6 ET and TBS at 7. Watch for other Cinderella teams as they try to advance deeper into the tournament, starting with Yale – now with its first victory in NCAA tournament play – facing Duke at 2:30 p.m. ET on CBS.

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

If you liked the original Pitch Perfect movie, or watch some of the singing competition shows on TV right now, this 2015 sequel is a perfectly acceptable, and enjoyable, Saturday night TV diversion. Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson reprise their roles as free-spirit a cappella singers.

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

This 1963 movie has a great cast, a great story, and is based on fact, so may not go where or how you might expect for a big-budget Hollywood WWII film. Steve McQueen is the epitome of a movie star here, and James Garner is right beside him, sometimes literally.

Viceland, 8:00 p.m. ET

When you’re a brand new network like Viceland, the fledgling 24-hour operation from the creator of Vice, how do you get viewers to sample your channel for the first time? Original programming aimed at young people is part of it – but scheduling great movies at opportune times is part of it, too, and tonight Viceland serves up two in a row. First up: Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 anti-war comedy masterpiece, starring Peter Sellers in a variety of roles. The film’s full title is Dr. Strangelove, Or… How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. But this movie, also co-starring George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden and Keenan Wynn, is no bomb. It’s great.

Viceland, 10:00 p.m. ET

Another well-chosen Saturday movie presentation from the new Viceland network. This 1984 Rob Reiner comedy is a classic rockumentary spoof of a fictional heavy-metal act, and age has only improved it. On my scale of delightful and original comedies, score this one all the way up to 11. Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest star.
