BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Various Networks, 12:00 p.m. ET

So here it is. The first full day of March Madness, with 16 games spread over various networks in a deliriously crammed 12-hour stretch. The action starts at noon ET on CBS, with Notre Dame (seeded No. 3 in the Midwest region) playing Northeastern (seeded No. 14), and ending just before 10 p.m. ET on truTV with the tipoff of Georgetown (No. 4 in the South) vs. Eastern Washington (No. 13). In between: 14 other games, including, at 9:40 pm. ET on CBS, the undefeated No. 1 Midwest seed Kentucky, favored to win the entire tournament, against No. 16 Hampton, which just squeaked into the tournament and now gets to face this year’s Goliath. The other No. 1 seed playing today is Villanova, in the East region, which plays No. 16 seed Lafayette at 6:50 p.m. ET on TBS. Also providing tournament coverage today: TNT. Four networks, 16 games, 32 teams. And it happens again tomorrow: same numbers, different rosters. Whew.

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

Last night, this series was bumped by the two-hour season finale of Empire – and in one recent Idol live show, host Ryan Seacrest asked two of that show’s stars, sitting in the audience, how it felt to be on the top-rated program on TV. Then Seacrest added, wistfully, that he remembered when he was on the top-rated show on TV. Well, tonight, American Idol gets the entire two hours of prime time on Fox, as it presents performances from the Top 10 finalists, then says goodbye to some of them – unless the judges exert their right to “save” one.

ABC, 9:00 p.m. ET

Just a note about a pop-culture crossover event: Lena Dunham, who plays a wannabe author on HBO’s Girls, does a cameo tonight on Scandal, playing an author – of what may be this show’s answer to Fifty Shades of Grey. Publicity stunt? Sure. Effective? I wrote about it, didn't I?

ABC, 10:00 p.m. ET

Watch Regina King tonight, and you’ll understand what sort of broad scope and daring vision this new ABC series is attempting. Her character, and her situation with her loved ones, isn’t at all what you’d expect from a crime drama – which is precisely the point.

Comedy Central, 11:00 p.m. ET

Last night, Kevin Hart showed up, in a very funny interview segment, to promote Get Hard, his new comedy movie with Will Ferrell – and he never said a word about it. Tonight, Hart’s co-star, Ferrell, gets equal time, and perhaps he’ll remember to plug his project. Or maybe not, but at least it should be a very funny visit with Stewart.

Bianculli’s curation effectively balances nostalgia with timely cultural markers, especially highlighting the ironic origins of Aquaman alongside the poignant Morrison tribute. https://victoryfoodscn.com
