BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

TruTV, 6:30 p.m. ET

Tonight’s first game: Cal Poly Mustangs vs. Texas Southern Tigers.  The Mustangs may be this year’s least likely NCAA participants, having ended the season with a record of 13-19. (The Tigers, by contrast, though also competing in a please-let-us-in “First Four” game, have a winning record of 19-14.)  But one of the thrills of watching March Madness is to witness the feisty spirit of little teams with nothing to lose who manage to peak at just the right time. At 9 p.m. ET, the second game follows, featuring the Iowa Hawkeyes (20-12) vs. the Tennessee Volunteers (21-12). Both games are televised live by TruTV.

Food Network, 8:00 p.m. ET

Kerry Vincent, from Last Cake Standing and The Food Network Challenge, steps up in this new series to pull a Gordon Ramsay for bakeries in trouble, and descend with advice, observations and other kinds of floury help. Consider it slow-rising payback of sorts: Given all that the Food Network has given her over the years, it’s the yeast she can do.

CW, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This new CW premiere is another in the network’s series of sci-fi fantasies populated by impossibly beautiful and handsome young adults. You may consider this one worth sampling, at least once, though, for two reasons. One is the far-fetched premise, which has a space-station colony that has orbited a nuclear-war-ravaged Earth for almost a century, and is sending down youthful prisoners – led by Eliza Taylor as Abby – as test subjects to see if the planet is ready for repopulation. Hey presto, kids!: It’s part Dirty Dozen, part Lord of the Flies, part Survivor and part The Time Machine. But the other reason to watch is that the space station folks, the ones in charge, are a bit older, wiser and more talented than the usual CW crowd. They include (pictured) Henry Ian Cusick, who played Desmond on Lost; Paige Turco from Damages and American Gothic; and Isaiah Washington from Grey’s Anatomy. Parts of the premiere are absurd, but there are a few unexpected moments, too, which is a step up for the CW.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

Margo Martindale returns, in this new episode, in her recurring role as Claudia – and this time, the mission she has for Elizabeth and Philip (Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys) isn’t one they’re eager to hear, much less undertake.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Emily Mortimer and Dolly Wells star in this new HBO comedy, an import in which Mortimer, the co-star of HBO’s own Newsroom, plays an exaggerated version of herself. Her close friend Dolly Wells plays a exaggerated version of herself, too, and this six-part comedy, which features Mortimer and Wells as co-writers, has Emily the actress cheering up her childhood friend Dolly by hiring her as an on-set personal assistant.
