BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

All these years in, when this show works, it still works – and as with The Voice, among its most effective moments are the audition rounds, when contestants are told whether they’ll be going through to the competition round. Last night, when 16-year-old Tyanna Jones (pictured) got the nod, it was truly touching – and, thanks to her confident performance at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, totally deserved. The thinning of the herd continues tonight, which means more drama, more heartbreak – and, for some, more euphoria.

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

She never got to be shown on screen, but Carol Ann Susi, the offscreen voice of Howard’s mother, was a very funny element of this show. The actress’ unexpected death last November left the producers with a sad quandary: How to note the character’s absence? Tonight’s episode does just that, while also making room for guest star Nathan Fillion, playing himself. As in, for these guys, the hero of Firefly, and perhaps even the villain of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Yeah, he’s also the star of Castle, but this crew values a different type of pop-culture currency.

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

This is a message for all TVWW readers in general, but to any of my Rowan University film students in particular: If you’ve never seen this 1964 Stanley Kubrick satire about the Cold War, correct that mistake tonight. It’s one of the funniest, most audacious film comedies ever made – and sadly, given current events and the concerns over Russian encroachment, its subject has become topical all over again. Peter Sellers stars, in several different roles.

CBS, 8:30 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This is a warning, not a recommendation. I really like Matthew Perry, but this new CBS comedy, based on this first episode, may be even more painful for his fans to watch than for anyone else. The show’s producers proudly are ignoring, rather than remaking or adapting, the many years of the Tony Randall-Jack Klugman TV series, and, in tonight’s premise-establishing premiere, use only one joke from Neil Simon’s original play and movie. That isn’t just misguided. It’s stupid. And that one joke, by the way, is the only time I cracked a smile in the entire half hour – though I did wince a lot. Perry plays the sloppy Oscar character, while Thomas Lennon plays the fastidious Felix. For a full review, see Ed Bark’s Uncle Barky’s Bytes.

CBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES FINALE: The contents of this episode are shrouded in secrecy, but chances are it’ll include a wedding or two – and, if the rumors about Charlie Sheen and his sitcom character are true, a possible return from the dead. Which means that the final episode of Two and a Half Men, TV’s longest-running three-camera sitcom, might end up dealing with “Two Weddings and a Funeral.” Jon Cryer, Ashton Kutcher star.
