MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

You knew this had to happen, and tonight it does. This TV series from the Marvel universe presents a plot that ties in to a current big-screen Marvel movie – specifically, Thor: The Dark World. That’s why tonight’s TV plot concerns a magical, dangerous artifact from Asgard, Thor’s home world. And given the pervasiveness of pop-culture synergy and cross-promotion, I guess there’s no reason to be Thor about it.

 
  
 
 
THE MALTESE FALCON

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

This 1941 John Huston film, based on the Dashiell Hammett novel, is one of the absolute classics of film noir. Humphrey Bogart stars, along with Mary Astor, Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet. TCM’s current documentary series import, The Story of Film: An Odyssey, recently made a brilliant connection between this movie and Chinatown – and not just that Huston wrote and directed Maltese Falcon and co-starred in the latter.

 
  
 
 
DAVID BLAINE: REAL OR MAGIC?

ABC, 9:30 p.m. ET

It’s a fun idea for a special: Put magician David Blaine up close and personal, as usual, to do his tricks, but this time with celebrities as the ones being thrown by his illusions. So you get Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad dropping their jaws in amazement. And Katy Perry. And Ricky Gervais, and many others. Of course, while you’re watching their reactions, you’re paying less careful attention to what Blaine is doing. It’s called misdirection, Hollywood style. And why not?

 
  
 
 
FRONTLINE: WHO WAS LEE HARVEY OSWALD?

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

This two-hour examination of the alleged assassin of President John F. Kennedy isn’t new. In fact, it’s 20 years old, from a Frontline special shown originally in 1993, marking what was then the 30th anniversary of the JFK assassination. But Oswald rarely is studied in this much detail – that was true then, and on TV, it’s true now, so this Frontline remains, after all these years, TV worth watching. Check local listings.
