BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Every time a new Marvel movie or TV series launches, or especially a special like this that notes the significance and longevity of a Marvel comic-book character, I can’t help but think back, obsessively, to seventh grade in the mid-Sixties, when I sold my then-complete Silver Age collection of Marvel Comics to Randy Silverman for $75. My collection didn’t include the first issue of the original Captain America comic from 1941 (pictured), published by Marvel precursor Timely Comics. But it did include the first appearance by Captain America in a Marvel Comic, in The Avengers #4. I just looked it up, and that one comic, from 1964, has sold for $120,000. And one of the cornerstones of my collection, the first appearance of Spider-Man in 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15, has sold for as high as $1.1 million. Randy, if you’re out there, I hope you’re proud of yourself. Even adjusting for inflation, I’m pretty sure you got the better end of the deal… but I'm willing to swap back if you are.

ABC, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: For this new season, the heroine of this period spy series – an offshoot from the Captain America story as retold in recent Marvel Comics movies – relocates from New York to Los Angeles. This might make the new season a little more bright lights of Hollywood, and a little less East Coast noir. But whatever happens, Hayley Atwood, in the title role, will be at the center of things.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Why did Bonnie & Clyde become so much a part of the public imagination, both at the time they were robbing banks during the Depression and again as folk anti-heroes of the 1960s? For the latter, it was because of the 1967 classic movie Bonnie and Clyde, which glamorized them by casting Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty in the leading roles. But in the 1930s, when the real Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were robbing banks, their fame exploded exponentially after a roll of film they had left behind in a hideout was developed by authorities and published by the press, showing the couple playing with their weapons, with Bonnie even pointing hers at Clyde. This new American Experience uses lots of those photos, and others, to tell a familiar story in a very informative way. For a full review, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes. Check local listings.

Fox, 9:30 p.m. ET

This series has been moved later in the Tuesday lineup on Fox, but don’t forget about it. The Grinder remains one of the only good new comedies this season, and has gotten more and more enjoyable every single week. In tonight’s new episode, a flashback allows for a reunion between Grinder star Rob Lowe and former West Wing co-star Richard Schiff.

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

Frontline, Canada’s CBC and The New York Times team up to explore and explain the problems with diet supplements and vitamins, a billion-dollar pharmaceutical industry apparently teeming with problems, controversies, and dangers. My prescription regarding tonight’s Frontline: Take one hour, and call your doctor in the morning. Check local listings.

Pelayanan paling anjing yang pernah kami alami. Setelah uang masuk, sikap berubah total.

Hormat saya,
