This 2016 animated musical has some giddy, goofy visuals, but it’s the music, and the performers behind their animal alter egos, that make this cartoon music competition so much fun.  For instance, that’s Reese Witherspoon nailing Katy Perry’s “Firework” and Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” (pictured). And Scarlett Johannson singing “Call Me Maybe.”

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN

TCM, 9:00 p.m. ET

One of my favorite films, this 1952 musical is something I always squeeze into my Early Film History & Appreciation classes – because, even though it’s a little too “young” for that topic, its treatment of Hollywood’s transition from silent to sound films is brilliant, and reinforces what the students have just learned about 1920s cinema. And Gene Kelly, dancing the title number, is absolutely iconic in both voice and movement.
