BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

TVWW Update: David continues to be on the upswing, TVWW readers. While we expect him to post his own hello sometime very soon, the return of “Best Bets” is still up in the air for now, but may be a matter of weeks, more or less.

Meanwhile, FX has gotten off to an early fall start, premiering Better Things and Atlanta this week.  Better Things stars Pamela Adlon, a veteran of two Louis CK series. (He’s producing this time.) Ed Bark gives the show, and it’s cable channel FX, a thumbs up in Uncle Barky’s Bytes.

FX is also still in the horror game this year with the return of the third season of The Strain. For fans of the genre, we can honestly say where some series perhaps dwell more in the gore, The Strain is one of the truly disturbing and terrifying visions to come along, courtesy of creator and director Guillermo Del Toro.

Cinemax is also in early premiere mode with Quarry, a somber tale of a Vietnam veteran returning home. David Hinckley’s positive review is here.

If you’re a fan of Amazon’s Transparent, we are also listing a new Amazon Prime pilot episode (already ordered to series) by that series’ creator and director, Jill Soloway.  Her new series, I Love Dick, is an adaptation of Chris Kraus’s 1997 novel surrounding a married writer and her attempts to seduce a well-known literary critic with the knowledge of her husband. (See that and other picks listed this week below, at TV We're Watching.)

TVWW is still planning to post it’s annual Fall Premiere capsule reviews, although the launch date is still somewhat up in the air. We are anticipating next weekend if all goes well. We can give an early thumb’s up for two NBC shows: Kristin Bell and Ted Danson’s sitcom The Good Place (with a couple of legitimate laugh-out-loud gags) and the family drama This Is Us. Both have early signs of quality shows that should get their audience share.

As David continues to be kicking back in the lounger, please remember that we so appreciate your enthusiasm and interest in TVWW.  You can be sure he appreciates it, too.

Please stay tuned. — TVWW
