BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Matt Groening’s The Simpsons, after appearing as interstitial cartoon shorts on Fox’s The Tracey Ullman Show, premiered as a full-length TV show of its own in 1989, and changed the history of television animation. Season 30 of The Simpsons – think of that! – begins this fall.  Groening eventually rode his own wave by co-creating the loony and entertaining Futurama, and today, on Netflix, unveils only his third cartoon series in as many decades. It’s Disenchantment, set in a mythical medieval realm in which its female protagonist, a member of the royal family, rebels against an arranged marriage – and, like the heroine of The Princess Bride, roams the countryside with some loyal cohorts to evade her enemies and assert her independence. The first season of Disenchantment unspools today on Netflix, and it’s a serialized story, with cliffhangers, recurring villains and conflicts, and a novelistic structure. It’s a daunting structure, and it’ll take a few seasons to establish whether Disenchantment can support its own weight. (The other way would have been to go with stand-alone stories, much like the still-revered “Fractured Fairy Tales” from Jay Ward’s “Rocky & Bulwinkle” universe.) But one part of Disenchantment that works thoroughly and consistently is an element that reminds me of the best cartoon panels from Mad magazine: Watch closely for the background scenic elements, especially any storefront signs or other printed matter. Nothing’s there by accident, and pretty much everything is wildly clever. For a full review, see David Hinckley’s All Along the Watchtower.

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Netflix continues to roll out new series with the indiscriminate onslaught of an avalanche – and today, in addition to unveiling Disenchantment (which I’ve previewed separately) and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (which I haven’t), the streaming service presents the U.S. premiere of this imported Polish crime series from 2017. It stars Marta Nieradkiewicz as Ola, a young woman who returns to Lodz from London, witnesses a violent accident that may be murder, and falls in with a small band of tech-savvy amateur sleuths who call themselves the Violets. (This Ultraviolet is not associated with the 2006 Milla Jovovich sci-fi film.) What makes this subtitled entry noteworthy is that it’s fairly polished (not just Polish), and I’m a big supporter of anything that brings us TV from other countries and cultures.

TCM, 6:00 a.m. ET

Today’s “Summer Under the Stars” on TCM salutes Barbra Streisand, which leads to a day of films that are fun to revisit – including 1972’s What’s Up, Doc? At 8:15 a.m. ET, 1970’s The Owl and the Pussycat at 10:15 a.m. ET, 1968’s Funny Girl at 12:15 p.m. ET, and 1973’s The Way We Were at 5:45 p.m. ET. And at night? The lineup includes 1983’s Yentl at 8 p.m. ET, 1991’s The Prince of Tides at 10:30 p.m. ET, and, at 1 a.m. ET, 1976’s A Star is Born (pictured), her movie-classic remake in which she starred opposite Kris Kristofferson – and which has just been remade again, for an upcoming movie musical romance co-starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: Three bakers have made it all the way to tonight’s Season 5 finale, which finally gives me a chance to put, on the record, one of my favorite vocabulary words of all time. Those exterior seeds on raspberries, those red bumps of delightful deliciousness (pictured)? They’re called drupelets. You’re welcome. Check local listings.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

What a week – and what a show. Among tonight’s guests: attorney Preet Bharara (pictured), whose insights into the federal and New York court cases of all the President’s men should prove impressively informed…
