BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

NBC, 4:00 p.m. ET

The stories spinning out from this year’s early rounds were classic, from 17-year-old high-schooler Beau Hossler (pictured) briefly leading the field at the U.S. Open to Tiger Woods entering the weekend tied for the lead, along with Jim Furyk and David Toms. But that was before Saturday – and now it’s Sunday, when the pressure’s on more than ever, and every mistake, and great show, is magnified. Woods had his worst Saturday ever, and has never come from behind to win, while Hossler still thinks he has a chance with a good final round. Furyk and Graeme McDowell, tied for the lead at -1, are the only players below par. Hossler is four shots off the lead, and Woods is five.

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

LeBron James vs. Kevin Durant is one of the most compelling matchups of this series, and that’ll continue tonight, with the Heat’s James feeding off home-court advantage. But Durant and the Thunder, while painting themselves into corners early, always seem capable of fighting their way out. The series is tied at one game apiece – and this earlier start time makes it a friendlier viewing experience for East Coast fans.

AMC, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: Finally, tonight we learn who killed Laura Palmer. And shot J.R. Ewing.  And what happened to the one-armed man. Actually, we learn the true identity of the killer, or killers, of Rosie Larsen, after a two-season plot line so prolonged, and so annoying strewn with herrings of every color, that it feels like a journey made before the creation of the national highway: all back roads, detours and dead ends. I’m still watching – but except for the lead performances, I’m not enjoying it much.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

This season’s shows are taking their titles from closing-credits musical selections, and this week’s, fittingly, is “Authority Always Wins.” Bill and Eric are not only captured, but firmly and deviously controlled, by the Authority – as embodied by tough leader Roman (Christopher Meloni) and the mysterious Salome (another wonderful new addition, played by Valentina Cervi).

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: There’s enough change and growth in this season finale to make it satisfying, and more than enough unexpected events to make it truly surprising. For a full preview, see Eric Gould’s Cold Light Reader assessment HERE.
