BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Hulu, 3:00 a.m. ET

I admit it: The longer The Act goes on, the more I’m unnerved by Joey King’s performance as the infirm daughter in this fact-based Hulu miniseries, and this is episode six. As the mother, Patricia Arquette has the showier role, all frazzles and freakouts – but King, as the drama has proceeded and her character’s independence and sexuality have awakened, has gotten to play shades that you seldom see on television, of both hidden desire and seething resentment.

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SPECIAL PREMIERE: Beyoncé has done it again. She’s not only released a dynamic new set of music and dance, but done so in stealth fashion – revealing, on literally the day of this new Netflix special’s release, that it’s also being accompanied by a companion live album. Homecoming is a documentary account of the preparation and rehearsals for, as well as the performance of, her dynamic, historically and emotionally resonant stage concert recounting the musical legacies and contributions of historically black colleges. Staged at last year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, it included dozens of dancers and college marching band members, backing Beyoncé in yet another dazzling, and meaningful, live performance.

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

SPECIAL PREMIERE: I’d be more enthused about this PBS program if James Burke hadn’t done it before, and so, so much better, in another series presented by PBS back in the 1970s. That series was called Connections, and I still treasure it, watch it – and, occasionally, teach it to my TV students. But some of the ideas here didn’t even exist then, so here comes Breakthrough. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the WatchtowerCheck local listings.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

Oooh, scary TV show, boys and girls! Tonight on What We Do in the Shadows, the Staten Island vampires venture onto another island. Specifically, Manhattan, where they dare to enter a downtown nightclub.

IFC, 10:00 p.m. ET

At the end of last week’s episode, Hank Azaria’s Jim Brockmire suffered a mild attack during a live play-by-play baseball broadcast. It wasn’t a heart attack or a stroke, though. It was a sudden inability to find the right words to complete a thought, which he described, in panicked tones, as a case of “the yips.” And this week, he has to deal with that, which ought to be very funny indeed. Yip, yip, hooray!
