BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Fox, 12:00 p.m. ET

I apologize for not listing, in Best Bets, the previous game featuring the U.S. women’s soccer team at this year’s World Cup. What can I say? I dropped the ball – and I shouldn’t have been holding it in the first place, because I’m no goalie. In that first match, the U.S. squad beat Thailand like it was a scrimmage, winning by an absurdly dominant 13-0. Some say the Americans piled on; others say not to keep playing, and celebrating, would have insulted the other team on the world stage. Regardless, today at noon, in its second group stage game, the U.S. takes on Chile, which lost to Sweden 0-2 in its opening game – which was Chile’s first World Cup appearance ever. Watch in particular for USA’s Alex Morgan (pictured), who scored five goals in the game against Thailand. Amazing.

Fox, 2:00 p.m. ET

The final day of this year’s U.S. Open, from Pebble Beach, begins with Gary Woodland (pictured) holding on to his lead, but only barely. After three days of play, he’s still atop the leader board, but by only one stroke. He’s at 11 under par, with Justin Rose right behind at 10 under. Other players not far behind include Brooks Koepka, who with a victory would match a feat accomplished by only one other golfer in history by winning his third straight U.S. Open, starting the day at seven under par. Also, Rory McIlroy is at six under, and other long-time fan favorites are back in the distance, with Tiger Woods at even par, Jordan Spieth at one over par, and Phil Mickelson at three over par.

BBC America, 8:00 p.m. ET

The current season of Luther keeps getting better – and bloodier. And Alice (Ruth Wilson), as expected, is right in the middle of things. The plot thickens. So does the blood-spatter pattern.

CBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Well, it’s the series premiere on CBS, anyway. This series, an excellent spinoff of the also excellent CBS series The Good Wife, began not on the CBS broadcast network, but on its streaming sister site CBS All Access, which also offers new iterations of Star Trek and The Twilight Zone. But you have to pay for them – while, if you wait long enough, apparently, you might get them for free via CBS, as with tonight’s first two episodes of Season 1 of The Good Fight. Christine Baranski stars, reprising her role from The Good Wife, and the series is indeed a very worthy successor. But be forewarned: This broadcast TV version is edited twice. Once for length, because the episodes for CBS All Access often ran more than 10 minutes more than a commercial-filled broadcast “hour.” And once for content, to cut back on the streaming-site-accepted rough language and sexual scenes. So one way or another, on CBS, you get what you pay for. And don’t get what you don’t… For a full story, see Mike Hughes' Open Mike.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

Season 2 of Big Little Lies continues, with Celeste (Nicole Kidman) trying to maintain and strengthen her relationship with her sons after the death of their father – but with his visiting mother, played by Meryl Streep, upsetting that family dynamic in several different ways.

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Kevin Bacon stars in this new Showtime crime series, which numbers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon among its executive producers, and claims quality TV pioneer Tom Fontana as its showrunner. For my full review on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, visit the Fresh Air website. And for reviews here on TVWW, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes and David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

HBO, 11:00 p.m. ET

Because every week he’s on TV, I’m recommending him. Neither he nor his show has let me down yet… which is a lot more than I can say about the current events he summarizes.
