BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

TBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

The New York Yankees lost the first two games in its best-of-seven American League Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers, despite having home-field advantage, and lost team captain Derek Jeter to a brutal ankle injury along the way. Now it’s Game 3, in Detroit – and these tigers, like their feline namesakes, can smell blood.

Various Networks, 9:00 p.m. ET

The conventional wisdom has it that Mitt Romney soundly beat President Barack Obama in their first debate. Now comes the rematch – and whatever happens, don’t expect Obama to be staring down at his podium so much. But do expect Romney to stare at Obama just as often. And here it begins – round two, in a town hall debate setting at Hofstra University. All the broadcast networks but the CW are covering it -- and the usual cable outlets are there as well.

CW, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Mamie Gummer, the daughter of Meryl Streep, stars in this new CW series, which has enough heart, twists and talent to lift it slightly above the rest of this season’s new broadcast TV series. For a full review, see Bianculli’s Blog.

History, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This eight-part documentary series looks at a handful of the most influential and wealthy entrepreneurs in American history – men with names like Carnegie and Rockefeller.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

Last week’s installment of this series dropped my jaw lower than any TV moment this season, thanks to an unbilled, unforgettable guest appearance by Walton Goggins, who’s done such fantastic work already on Justified and The Shield. Reteaming with Kurt Sutter, one of the former writer-producers of The Shield, Goggins showed up playing a transgender escort named Venus Van Damme, who figures in the motorcycle club’s blackmail efforts for a city councilman. Goggins, as Venus, was so outrageous and yet so grounded, so playful and yet so serious, that the character simply has to make a return appearance. Shane, Boyd and now Venus. How has this guy not won a Supporting Actor Emmy yet?
