BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

The worst thing about this series, now that it’s begun to settle in and establish its strengths and weaknesses, is the absurd optimism of the celebrity panelists. They try to deduce, by deciphering clues and paying close attention to vocal mannerisms and performance moves, which celebrities are under the various elaborate costumes. But their guesses are absurdly detached from reality. Lady Gaga, guesses one panelist. One of the Kardashians, guesses another. Elton John, guesses a third. No, probably not, and no, in that order. But the sheer goofiness of this competition may be at the highest level since the original Iron Chef – and even if the performances aren’t always impressive, the costumes usually are. I’m not lyin’ – and underneath the lion king costume seen tonight, neither is Elton. I’m sure of it, because, like any self-respecting lion, Elton John has his pride.

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

The fall of Saddam Hussein is well known to many, though young adults may find the story unfamiliar and surprising. But the rise of that Iraqi dictator, who ruled that country as President from 1979 until 2003, is just as dramatic – and instructive. Check local listings.

Syfy, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This is not a recommendation. This new Syfy series is set in the 1980s, which allows for some enjoyable period music played on the soundtrack and as part of the natural atmosphere. It’s about a school for misfits and outcasts with special talents and powers, and is based on the 2014 graphic novel series by Rick Remender (who’s one of the executive producers and overseers here) and his several artist co-creators. Time and sensitivities have resulted in some changes for TV (guns no longer are brandished openly in school), but not others (white supremacists remain one of the school’s dominant social cliques). The imagery, attractively adapted for television, is the main star of tonight’s series premiere, with an early cast standout being Maria Gabriela de Faria as the sometimes elaborately made-up Maria (pictured). But the story? It’s like a samurai school Freaks and Geeks – but neither as inventive nor as entertaining as that might sound. For full reviews, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower and Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes.
