TCM, 6:00 a.m. ET
In focusing on Douglas Fairbanks Jr. as the day’s featured star, TCM is stressing the sound, rather than silent, movies, and includes all four of his most famous roles. While the 24-hour salute begins at 6 a.m. ET, the quartet of major classics begins at 1:45 p.m. ET with 1947’s Sinbad the Sailor (opposite Maureen O’Hara, pictured), followed immediately at 4 p.m. ET by 1939’s Gunga Din (opposite Cary Grant). Then, in prime time, it’s another powerful double feature: At 8 p.m. ET, it’s 1937’s The Prisoner of Zenda (opposite Ronald Colman), followed at 10 ET by 1941’s The Corsican Brothers (opposite himself: he plays Siamese twins, separated as babies.)
TNT, 8:00 a.m. ET
Afternoon storms wreaked enough havoc at yesterday’s Round 2 of the PGA Championship to knock over the on-course scoreboard, and ended up suspending play until this morning. So after the last of the Round 2 players complete their 18 holes, the golfers making the cut to today’s day three begin competing. What it means is more pressure, more uncertainty – and, on a single day of TV coverage, more golf. At 2 p.m. ET, the action in Round 3 shifts to CBS.
BBC America, 8:00 p.m. ET
As a six-week prelude to the new season of Doctor Who, BBC America is presenting a retrospective of the eight most popular episodes in the modern Doctor Who canon (since the very impressive modern reboot). Tonight’s kickoff celebration is a double feature, and one of them is among my favorite Doctor Who episodes of all: the one introducing the scary stone angels. How can something that can’t move be scary? Watch closely. Because if you don’t, they’ll move…
HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET
Eddie Redmayne won an Oscar for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in this 2014 film biography of the pioneering physicist. Felicity Jones co-stars.
NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET
There are only three episodes left in this series – the final three courses. Which means dessert is not that far away…and tonight, neither is another killer, the elusive yet familiar Red Dragon.
