BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

The Top 8 surviving contestants face elimination tonight – well, a few of them will, after the national voting results are revealed. And then the three singers with the lowest vote totals will perform again, for survival, with the winner instantly moving on, and the others hoping for some sort of instant, and rare, reprieve from the judges.

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

In tonight’s new episode, Dan and Roseanne celebrate their 45th anniversary – but the celebration is muted as Dan realizes many of his prescribed pain pills are missing, and finds a stash of them hidden in the house. He sets out to find the culprit, and the motive. And, in this penultimate Roseanne of the season, he does…

NBC, 9:01 p.m. ET

SERIES FINALE: This episode was intended as the season finale, with the high schoolers finally presenting their controversial but inspirational student production of Spring Awakening. But NBC, which just announced its fall 2018 schedule, has cancelled Rise, so this serves as the show’s very last episode. Consider it the Rise and fall of this latest series from Jason Katims – or, instead of a Spring Awakening, consider it a Summer Closing… For a full story about NBC's coming fall schedule, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

I really look forward to new episodes of this series, because I have no idea what’s going to happen. And when it’s over, I savor it all, wondering and trying to figure out what it all means. Tonight, angered by what the evil and extremely powerful Farouk has done to his sister, David sets out for a vengeful confrontation. At least I think that’s what happening. I love that this series now prefaces its clips of images from previous episodes by announcing the simple, yet mind-twisting, “Apparently, on Legion…” Really: How smart is that?

National Geographic, 10:00 p.m. ET

Young Picasso sees carved African masks in a museum. Elder Picasso explains how that vision inspired a vision of his own: his famous Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. For Picasso, it’s just another day at the office, or the studio – but for this series, it’s another episode exploring, and explaining, the inspiration of Genius.
