BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

BroadwayHD, 12:00 a.m. ET

Here's a special streaming event that’s already begun, but that slipped by me – yet it’s still available for a while, so I’ll mention it here. The website BroadwayHD released, a few days ago, a filmed performance of the 30th anniversary West End production of the stage production of the musical Fame, which began as a movie in 1980, and continued as an NBC series in 1982. (Think of it as the original Glee – because it was.) This recent Fame stage production was filmed last year, a revival of the London production that premiered in 1995.

SPECIAL: Here’s another limited-window streaming TV event well worth seeking out. For a few days only, from tonight through Sunday, the Prince estate is hosting a “watch party,” a charity event supporting the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 response. It’s not a brand new concert, or TV offering: Prince and the Revolution: Live captured the band on stage at Syracuse, NY in 1985, during Prince’s Purple Rain tour, and previously was available on home video and as a TV special. But this streaming TV premiere, coming just one month after CBS’s Grammy Salute to Prince, captures the entertainer at his absolute best. The 20-song set list includes not only such Purple Rain hits as “Let’s Go Crazy,” “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die 4 U,” and the title track, but also includes “Little Red Corvette,” “1999,” and others. The remastered concert film is available exclusively, for four days only, on the official Prince YouTube Channel.

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Last week, Catherine O’Hara, the SCTV and Schitt’s Creek veteran who almost never shows up on television as herself, showed up opposite host Jimmy Kimmel to play Millionaire for charity. She earned $32,000 last week before the show ended, and this week continues her quest for the big charity contribution. She still has help: with the studio audience banned from the set due to COVID-19 concerns, Millionaire currently allows its celebrity contestants to bring along a single audience “member,” who can chime in with input on the first 10 questions. O’Hara chose to bring Brad Rutter, one of the three players in the recent all-star ultimate battle on Jeopardy! Now that’s smart… and tonight, if he helps her get to the high-risk, big-money solo level, we’ll see how smart she is. I’m rooting for her, if only for memories of her Lola Heatherton on SCTV.
