BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Pop, 8:00 p.m. ET

What used to be the TV Guide Network has been rebranded and redesigned, beginning today as Pop. Just as much pop culture coverage and focus, but fewer scrolled listings. For the record, one of the new original shows, premiering tonight, is Rock This Boat, a documentary series that goes along on fan cruises to document interactions between fans and stars. The first fan cruise is built around New Kids on the Block – and while that sounds entirely missable to me, I would sign up in a minute for something Matt Weiner joked about during his Television Critics Association press session a few days ago: a Mad Men cruise. So would the major casts members, all of whom raised their hands when asked if they would climb aboard such a cruise. So how about it, cruise lines? Can you imagine the signature drinks, trivia contests and Sixties-era karaoke lists?

ABC, 9:00 p.m. ET

Tonight it’s personal: the new neighbors (played by Steve Zahn and Andrea Anders) have turned out not only to be less than ideal, but to be positively horrible. For the extended Dunphy family, this means war – and the battle begins tonight.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Welcome to the true Big Bang Theory. Tonight’s Nova takes a look at the scientific quest for something so elusive, it makes Bigfoot look like a camera-hungry Kardashian. It’s the Higgs Boson – and to recreate the energy field that theorists suspect emerged from the so-called Big Bang, scientists need a very, very big particle accelerator, a lot of patience, and a lot of luck. Here we go. Check local listings.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s new episode is titled “Show Stoppers,” and boy, does it feature one. The special guest star, playing a potentially mad magician, is someone who’s both well-versed in performing magic acts and in stopping shows whenever he performs, or hosts. He’s Neil Patrick Harris – and he fits into this twisted ensemble like a bloody glove.

FXX, 10:30 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Jay Baruchel stars in this new FXX series, which is worth seeking out because it’s so impressively unusual.  It starts as the story of a young man suffering a painful romantic breakup and emerging, wounded and uncertain, into the singles life – and there’s nothing unusual about that. But it’s the way he sees that world, and reacts to it, that elevates Man Seeking Woman from the typical to the anything but. For full reviews, see Eric Gould’s Cold Light Reader, or read and hear my review on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross by visiting the Fresh Air website.
