BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

HBO, 9:00 a.m. ET

Today’s new episode is called “Valentine’s Day” – so watch out for the Candy Monster.

Showtime, 8:00 p.m. ET

The great Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West star in this fact-based 2014 movie about Welsh miners who go on strike, and gain support from the unlikeliest of allies: a group of gay and lesbian activists from London.

CBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

The field is a bit thinner for this latest Republican presidential debate, televised live from Greenville, SC. Jim Gilmore failed to qualify for the event, and both Carly Fiorino and Chris Christie have suspended their campaigns, cutting the debate field to six: Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Ben Carson and John Kasich. Face the Nation anchor Jim Dickerson is the main moderator.

BBC America, 9:00 p.m. ET

Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones makes the first of her cross-genre appearances on Doctor Who – and in this Season 9 repeat episode, her appearance will be embellished with “Doctor’s Notes,” pointing out details and “in jokes” you might have missed the first time around. New Doctor Who episodes aren’t showing up until next year, so why not?

TCM, 10:15 p.m. ET

Made in 1979, this is a fabulous fable of a film. Jerzy Kosinski, adapting his own novel, wrote the screenplay about a very simple, sheltered man (played by Peter Sellers) who goes out into the real world, in Washington DC, with very unpredictable and unforgettable results. Shirley MacLaine co-stars, Hal Ashby directs, and the whole thing is a funny, touching, thought-provoking character study.

NBC, 11:29 p.m. ET

Melissa McCarthy, who attacks this show like her own personal comedy playground, returns as guest host. The musical guest also shows up on SNL ready to play, and innovate, each time: Kanye West.
