BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

This low-budget 1962 movie is called Panic in Year Zero, but might as well have been titled Panic During the Cold War. Imagine it as The Walking Dead without the zombies: Los Angeles has been wiped out by a nuclear attack, and a local family far enough away, on a fishing trip, to survive has to tend with all the unexpected post-nuclear threats: not only fallout and radiation poisoning, but opportunistic thugs roaming the countryside, looting and raping. This frightened little film stars Sixties teen idol Frankie Avalon, in the first of five of his movies shown tonight on TCM. Most of the others, including 1963’s Beach Party (10 p.m. ET) and 1965’s Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine (2 a.m. ET), are much, much lighter in tone. All three, in their own ways, though, are disaster films… but nevertheless fun to watch, more than 50 years later. Ray Milland co-stars, and also directs.

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

In tonight’s episode, Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) turns 21, and throws himself what he considers a fittingly big bash. It’s worth noting, if only for the fact that, given recent headlines about Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly, this may be the only part of the Fox Empire these days that’s in any mood to celebrate.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

MINISERIES CONCLUSION. Part 3 of 3. Spoiler Alert: we win. Check local listings.

FXX, 10:00 p.m. ET

As Archer (J. Jon Benjamin) continues to dream while in a comatose state, his dreams have settled, for now, on an alternate “Dreamland” universe where all his friends and enemies are recast in a film noir fantasy. Tonight, that fantasy becomes flesh, sort of, as Judy Greer, known in Archer’s real world as Cheryl, comes on to Archer as a femme fatale named “Berenice” – the title of tonight’s installment. The vocal performers, and writers, rise to the occasion, even if Archer doesn’t.

IFC, 10:00 p.m. ET

This new IFC series has established its characters firmly, and cleverly, in just a few episodes: Hank Azaria is the burned-out baseball broadcaster with a legendary meltdown behind him and little ahead of him. Amanda Peet is the attention-hungry owner of a minor-league team who hires Azaria’s Brockmire for whatever residual promo value he might generate. And Tyrel Jackson Williams plays one of her employees, a young man who knows nothing about baseball, little about Brockmire, but everything about the Internet. In tonight’s third episode, “Kangaroo Court,” the three of them attempt to mediate a dispute between two of the team’s many splintered factions.
