BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

AMC, 9:00 p.m. ET

The divide-and-conquer narrative structure of this season’s The Walking Dead continues to pay dividends. Two weeks ago, it was an episode devoted to Eugene. Last week, it was a road trip with Rick and Michonne. And tonight, we spend a lot of time with Carol – different characters, different agendas, very different settings within this show’s post-apocalyptic nightmare world. Tonight’s episode may sport some grave secrets – and based on an image from the network promo, I mean that literally.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

This is episode 4, and it’s the episode in which both the therapy sessions and the interactions between the ladies – and men – of this very intense little neighborhood get very intense. Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman star.

ABC, 10:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: American Crime is one of those two, two, two-shows-in-one TV hybrids. It’s a miniseries, in that it tells a story with a beginning, middle and end – this season, its third, in eight weekly installments. But it’s also an anthology series, with each season examining a different crime story at length – and, with American Crime, having many core players returning in new roles. One of them is Regina King, who’s already won Supporting Actress Emmys in this show’s two previous seasons, for two very different roles. Tonight, she plays a third, as do eventual returnees Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton and others. For full reviews, see David Hinckley’s All Along the Watchtower and Ed Bark’s Uncle Barky’s Bytes.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

Episode 2 of this new Feud anthology miniseries from Ryan Murphy – like American Crime, a hybrid anthology series and miniseries – really gets into the dynamics of the battle between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, as they begin filming the 1960s horror film What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? This is the episode in which Crawford bares both her insecurities and her fangs – and in which Davis (played by Susan Sarandon), in a brilliant move to upstage her screen co-star, emerges from her dressing room at the start of filming with a layer of makeup inspired by Japanese kabuki actors.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

This final season of Girls has delivered one excellent, unexpected plot twist after another, from character revelations to the recent mini-play, in which guest star Matthew Rhys played an author either victimized by, or victimizing, Lena Dunham’s Hannah. Tonight, Hannah’s mom, Loreen (played by Becky Ann Baker), comes home to roost – or, at least, her problems and issues do, as Loreen comes to visit after separating from Hannah’s father.

HBO, 11:00 p.m. ET

Last week, after doing the expected and unavoidable week’s debriefing on President Donald Trump, John Oliver took a major, and majorly appreciated, left turn, by interviewing the Dalai Lama. What will Oliver do tonight? All I know is I’ll be watching… and grateful for the opportunity.
