BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CW, 8:00 p.m. ET

SPECIAL: If the secret to successful comedy is timing, this MADtv retrospective special appears at a very odd time – as well as a very odd place. The original MADtv was broadcast by Fox, yet its 20th Anniversary Reunion special is presented by the CW. And it’s presented in 2016, when the original premiere of MADtv was back in 1995 – so the time for this celebration was sometime last year. Cast members are reported to be back for this one-hour stroll down memory lane, which includes lots and lots and lots of clips. But I’ll be happy, so long as it includes at least one clip of Will Sasso, with his devastatingly funny impression of Randy Newman (whom I love – but I love this impersonation, too).

PBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s episode features Henry Louis Gates, using DNA tests and genealogical detective work, finding ways to surprise tonight’s curious guests: Soledad O’Brien, Bill O’Reilly and Bill Maher. And what Gates uncovers surprises not only them – I guarantee, it’ll surprise you, too. Check local listings.

Freeform, 8:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Today, ABC Family changes its name to Freeform – and that’s where you’ll find tonight’s midseason premiere of Pretty Little Liars, last seen on the now-defunct ABC Family. A little time has passed since the Season 6 midseason finale, but much more time has elapsed in the show’s narrative itself. The action picks up five years after it left off – which is one way to have these cast members look closer to their actual ages. If only Beverly Hills, 90210 had done this, a few times, that show’s casting might have made sense by the end of the show’s run.

Various Networks, 9:00 p.m. ET

If this were a miniseries, it would be the finale – Episode 8 of a continuing narrative that began in 2009. So watch with a sense of completion, as well as possible apprehension about the quality of the sequel. President Barack Obama’s final State of the Union address is televised live by ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and PBS, as well as the expected cable news outlets. One difference in this final chapter: Unlike 2015 and previous installments, the background set will not include John Boehner (pictured at lower right).

Freeform, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This is more notation, and explanation, than recommendation. This show, officially, is the first new series scheduled by the Freeform Network, which at this point is less than a day old. Shadowhunters is based on the fantasy book series The Mortal Instruments, and is about a young woman who discovers, as she turns 18, that she has special powers, and a secret identity formerly unknown even to herself. As with MTV’s The Shannara Chronicles, also based on a fantasy book series and built around a young female protagonist, it’s an example of a TV network hungry to ride the wave of The Hunger Games – or, in terms of fantasy premise and demographic-seeking, not to diverge too far from Divergent. Katherine McNamara stars as Clara Fray, who learns she is, or is supposed to be, a demon-fighting half-human, half-angel. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.
