BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Hulu, 3:00 a.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: The first two episodes of Season 2 of Harlots are available now, offering a new series regular who joins Samantha Morton and company. It’s Liv Tyler (pictured), who plays a wealthy socialite who’s drawn into the world of the 18th-century London brothel trade. As Season 2 begins, it’s still a pitched battle between rival madams Margaret Wells (Morton) and her ruthless upscale counterpart, Lydia Quigley (Leslie Manville) – but almost instantly, Lydia is carted away to prison, creating a power vacuum that several players, new and old, rush to fill. Harlots is created, written and directed by women, so the dynamics, characterizations, and even the sex scenes are different, and more subtle and varied, than from what you might expect from a streaming series with this show’s title.

Fox, 2:00 p.m. ET

Yesterday, France controlled its match against the usually explosive Belgium so handily, and methodically, it was such a defensive display of confidence and greatness that, when France struck with a goal partway through, there was the sense that would be enough – and it was. France will play in the 2018 World Cup Final on Sunday, facing whichever team emerges triumphant in today’s semifinal match between England and Croatia. Croatia has served up nail-biting thrillers its last two games, beating Denmark in the knockout stage only after winning 3-2 on penalty kicks, then knocked host team Russia out of the quarterfinals by lasting until the penalty-kick phase again, and winning 4-3. England had its own recent penalty-kick thriller, playing Colombia to a draw in regulation and extended play in the knockout stage, then outlasting Columbia by beating them 4-3 on penalty kicks. England then beat Sweden 2-0 in the quarterfinals, displaying a confidence and patience that makes them an unexpectedly exciting team for which to root also. So today, it’s England vs. Croatia – another potentially great game in what has been a phenomenally unpredictable and entertaining World Cup series.

TruTV, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Comedian Goldthwait’s name is in the title not because he’s on screen in this new anthology series (he’s not), but because he’s the creator, and has generated this string of stand-alone stories that mix suspense and fantasy tales with something comically twisted. So the werewolf, for example, isn’t running from an angry mob: it’s running for high political office. And in tonight’s opener, “Bubba the Bear,” an actor (played by Robot Chicken co-creator and Buffy the Vampire Slayer veteran Seth Green) who provided the voice of a cartoon character begins to haunted, and threatened, by that toon character in real life.
