BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Acorn TV, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Here’s a newly imported Western, but one with a very different perspective. Actually, two of them: This British import, which shares only the title with the recent post-apocalyptic cult series, is an eight-part Western. But it’s a Western set in 1870s Yorkshire, so it’s a British Western in setting and in style. And it’s also one that focuses primarily on a woman, played by Jessica Raine. For a full review, and a link to the Acorn TV website, see David Hinckley’s All Along the Watchtower.

Showtime, 7:30 p.m. ET

SERIES RETURN: In case you missed it last night, here’s a next-day repeat of the midseason return of Showtime’s outstanding political documentary series about the 2016 presidential campaign. It covers a devastatingly tragic news week, through last Friday, a week that ended up overshadowing, and in some cases cancelling, the candidates’ plans.

VH1, 9:00 p.m. ET

Here’s a special that’s an odd mix of female empowerment and nostalgia. Hip hop icons from around the start of the new century, including Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa and (pictured) Lil’ Kim, are saluted in this new VH1 special.

CBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

This series was pre-empted last week for 4th of July coverage, so you may need a reminder of where we stand in this Beltway politicans vs. alien brain-controlling bugs satire. No worries: At the very start of the show, BrainDead provides a clear and quick recap. And does it musically.

Pivot, 10:00 p.m. ET

MINISERIES PREMIERE: Based on the John Lanchester novel, and starring Gemma Jones and (pictured) Tony Jones, this new British import is a mystery, set in modern-day London, about a group of neighbors who receive similarly ominous postcards, with the identical terse and tense warning: “We Want What You Have.” In my neighborhood, any anonymous postcards I’m likely to receive would have a different warning: “We Want You to Mow Your Lawn.”
