BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Amazon Prime Video, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: The original “Rocky & Bullwinkle” cartoon series from the late 1950s and early 1960s, Rocky & His Friends and The Bullwinkle Show, may have been my first personal examples of Must-See TV. So the idea that Amazon Prime is reviving the show after all these years is good news, but also news that’s laced with a bit of apprehension – especially since Amazon didn’t make any episodes available for preview. After watching the first few episodes of the series that dropped this morning, I can say this: This new Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle got all the voices right, from the title roles to Boris and Natasha, and came close enough with the narrator. The structures of the episodes aren’t as varied, and the animation is stylized a bit differently but is passable. The jokes aren’t usually as good, warped or adult as they were in the old series, but the plots have the same sort of silliness, and a guest appearance by Gordon Ramsay, providing his own voice while hosting a cooking-competition TV show called “Le Grande Yum Yum,” somehow fits. Still, the best news of all is that Amazon Prime also provides all seasons of the original “Rocky & Bullwinkle” adventures. So head there first… immediately. Nothin’ up my sleeve…

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: This is Season 3 for this confidently entertaining and informative showcase for Bill Nye, and it begins with an episode about death – a bold and typically intriguing way to dive into the intersection of science and… everything else. Tyler the Creator guest stars in the opener, which taught me a cool new vocabulary word: apoptosis. As they say, you can look it up…

ABC, 9:01 p.m. ET

Tonight’s episode is called “The Force of Gravity,” and it continues the story line in which Talbot (Adrian Pasdar), fully fueled by the alien element known as Gravitonium, is on a massive power trip. He may save the world, but he may also destroy it…

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s scheduled lineup is nothing if not eclectic: actor Ethan Hawke, Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter, and former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich are all scheduled to appear.
