BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

Ben Affleck has the title role in this 2016 action thriller, playing a character who speaks softly and carries a heavy slide rule. This movie is notable, at least, for its unusual supporting cast, which includes Anna Kendrick, Jeffrey Tambor, John Lithgow, Jean Smart, and J.K. Simmons.

Starz!, 8:00 p.m. ET

Here’s another example, like the new Showtime series I’m Dying Up Here (about L.A. standup comedy in the 1970s), of Hollywood fictionalizing a story that arguably would be much better if retold as it happened. Al Pacino plays the fictional title character, a long-time journeyman musician who discovers, 40 years later, that John Lennon had sent him a personal letter, with a home phone number and an offer to converse, that the lesser-known artist had never received. In real life, the musician was Steve Tilston, who learned of the letter 34 years after Lennon wrote it in 1971.

BBC America, 9:00 p.m. ET

In addition to creating the character of Tarzan the Ape Man, author Edgar Rice Burroughs also wrote a famous series of sci-fi novels starting with The Princess of Mars, written in 1912. More than a century later, Doctor Who plays with that idea, and even a vintage time period, with tonight’s episode, called “The Empress of Mars.” And not only does the titular heroine get a promotion, but the time period gets a reboot – because the Doctor and his companions not only revisit Mars, but show up there in 1881.

BBC America, 10:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: This final season of Orphan Black begins powerfully, and emotionally, in ways that I don’t want to even hint at revealing. But I will say this: I’ve previewed the first three episodes of this last go-round for this series, and Tatiana Maslany, playing so many complicated roles, continues to knock me out with her versatility. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower

BBC America, 11:00 p.m. ET

For a couple weeks now, Graham Norton has compiled a couch full of guests who have not, as a collective, been exciting enough to single out for special viewing effort. But tonight is different: In addition to the other guests, tonight’s Graham Norton Show makes room for two powerful screen icons. One is Tom Cruise, who’s been a member of Hollywood royalty since the 1980s. The other is a brand new icon: Gal Gadot (pictured), whose movie Wonder Woman just opened with a big enough box office to signal a welcome shift in big-budget superhero movies.
