BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

One of the smartest moves made by this rebooted revisit of the old ABC Roseanne series was to find roles for both of the young actresses who had played Roseanne’s daughter Becky over the years. Lecy Goranson had originated the role, and Sarah Chalke, who achieved additional fame as the co-star of Scrubs, inherited it. In this new 2018 iteration, the role of Becky reverts to Goranson, who finds a possible path to financial solvency by engaging in a surrogacy arrangement and accepting money to bring to term an embryo implanted from a woman incapable of carrying out the pregnancy. That woman, Andrea, is played by Chalke – and their arrangement is tested tonight in an episode titled “Eggs Over, Not Easy.” Laurie Metcalf, as Becky’s outspoken aunt, tries to intercede – and also guest starring is Rhea Seehorn, the female co-star of Better Call Saul.

CBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Taped shortly after this year’s Grammy Awards, this two-hour special invited Sir Elton John to sit front and center while the songs he wrote with lyricist Bernie Taupin were performed by a procession of grateful and passionate singers. Performers include Miley Cyrus (pictured) doing “The Bitch Is Back,” Ed Sheeran covering “Candle in the Wind,” Lady Gaga doing “Your Song,” Kesha doing “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and Elton joining them and more on stage for the finale, a raucous rendition of “I’m Still Standing.”

Fox, 9:30 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: This series returns for eight final episodes, starting Season 7 with a time jump that’s described in the season opener’s episodic title: “About 3 Years Later.” Jess and Nick (Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson), who finally confessed their love for one another in the previous season finale, are still together – but three years later, they’re returning from a European book tour.

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

The title of this new Frontline report refers not to President Donald Trump’s takeover of the White House, or of the 24-hour news cycle, or even of Twitter – but of how he joined, tackled, opposed, and conquered the Republican party itself. For a full review, see Alex Strachan's TV That MattersCheck local listings.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

Season 2 of this Noah Hawley superhero series, perhaps the least obvious and most mercurial comic-based series ever made, is rather astounding. Season 1 was about unreliable characters, and a story told by an unreliable narrator. In Season 2, there are new perspectives everywhere, and almost nothing you see, like no one you encounter, can be trusted, or taken at face value. But I promise this: the images and surprises you’ll encounter on Legion, especially this season, are all but unprecedented on TV. I’m amazed by this series, and confused, and thrilled.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

This new documentary looks at the life and rather inspiring career of Andre Roussimoff, who emerged from France, and a medical condition known as acromegaly, as Andre the Giant: a pro wrestler who achieved an even more lasting piece of fame as one of the beloved characters in the movie version of The Princess Bride.

Bianculli’s curation effectively balances nostalgia with timely cultural markers, especially highlighting the ironic origins of Aquaman alongside the poignant Morrison tribute. https://victoryfoodscn.com
