SPECIAL: There’s a lot going on this year. Women are front and center again, with such artists as Cardi B (pictured) and Janelle Monaé dominating the top categories. Soundtrack songs and albums are making movies matter this year, with Kendrick Lamar contending for Black Panther and Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper from A Star is Born. And after years of hip-hop being slighted in major categories, there’s a boycott this year, with Lamar, Drake, and Childish Gambino (Donald Glover’s musical alter ego) refusing to perform on the live TV show. Ariana Grande is refusing to appear as well, citing creative differences with the show’s longtime executive producer, Ken Ehrlich. So who is on tonight’s special? Alicia Keys hosts. Cardi B, Janelle Monaé and Miley Cyrus are all scheduled to perform live, as is a much more tenured female singer: Diana Ross, celebrating her 75^th birthday.

This week, President Donald Trump delivered a State of the Union address, and an accompanying thinly veiling threat about stopping the investigations into his administration… or else. Immediately afterward, the Democratic House of Representatives launched headlong into a new wave of investigations and committee hearings on several fronts. We appear headed for the second government shutdown of 2019 – and today on The Circus, its crew of correspondents tracks, and tries to make sense of, those recent, volatile political developments.

Tonight’s new episode has the royal family on the move once again – this time after an assassination attempt. Check local listings.

THE WALKING DEAD

TRUE DETECTIVE

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

In last week’s episode, in the modern timeline, the two former detective partners and long-estranged friends got together, had a tearful conversation, yet didn’t agree on whether to probe into the cold case that still haunted them both. If they don’t agree soon, this season of True Detective will have nowhere to go, except to live in the past, where lots of things are happening, surprisingly and violently.
